About Maternity Allowance

Eligibility Rules & Requirements

Statutory Maternity Pay (SMP)

Eligibility: You must be employed and earn at least £123 per week on average. You must give your employer correct notice and provide proof of pregnancy.
Duration: Up to 39 weeks
Rate: 90% of your average weekly earnings for first 6 weeks, then £172.48 or 90% of your average weekly earnings (whichever is lower) for remaining weeks.

Maternity Allowance (MA)

Eligibility: For self-employed, recently stopped working, or not eligible for SMP. Must have worked for at least 26 weeks in the 66 weeks before your due date.
Duration: Up to 39 weeks
Rate: £172.48 per week or 90% of your average weekly earnings (whichever is lower).

Notice Period & Documentation

Notice: Tell your employer at least 15 weeks before your due date when you want to start maternity leave.
Proof: Provide your employer with a MATB1 certificate from your doctor or midwife.
Payment: SMP is paid in the same way as your wages (tax and National Insurance deducted).

Important Dates

Qualifying Week: 15th week before your due date (determines eligibility)
Earliest Start: 11 weeks before your due date
Latest Start: Day after your baby is born
Return to Work: Must take at least 2 weeks off after birth (4 weeks if factory work)
