Understanding Torque

Torque is the rotational equivalent of linear force. It measures how much a force acting on an object causes that object to rotate. The pivot point is the point about which the object rotates.

Step 2: How to Calculate Torque

The torque formula is:

τ = r × F × sin(θ)

Where:

  • τ = Torque (N·m or lbf·ft)
  • r = Lever arm distance
  • F = Force applied
  • θ = Angle between force and lever arm

Example Calculation

If you apply a force of 120 N at the end of a 0.5 m wrench at a 90° angle:

τ = 0.5 × 120 × sin(90°) = 60 N·m
