Installation Guidelines
Gate Post Installation Formula
Post Hole Depth = 1/3 of Post Height + 6 inches for gravel
Post Hole Width = 3 × Post Width
Where:
• Post Height = Above ground height + buried depth
• Post Width = Width of post material
• Add concrete for stability
General Rules:
• Bury 1/3 of total post length for stability
• Use 6-8 inches of gravel at bottom for drainage
• Concrete should fill 2/3 of hole depth
Example Calculation
Example: 6×6 Wood Post for 8-foot Gate
Post Height: 8 feet above ground
Buried Depth: 3 feet (1/3 of 9 ft total)
Hole Depth: 3.5 feet (3 ft + 6 inches gravel)
Hole Width: 18 inches (3 × 6 inches)
Materials per post:
• 9-foot 6×6 post
• 0.5 cubic yards concrete
• 0.25 cubic yards gravel
• Gate hardware kit
Total for 4 posts:
• 36 feet of 6×6 lumber
