Sliding Gate Calculator
Calculate sliding gate dimensions, materials, track length, and motor requirements. Determine proper sizing for residential or commercial sliding gates.
Step 1: Gate Specifications
Track Length Formula
Track Length = Gate Width × 1.5 + 2 ft (for overtravel)
This ensures the gate can fully open and has space for the motor.
Step 2: Gate Type & Options
Common Gate Sizes
Residential single: 10-14 ft
Residential double: 16-24 ft
Commercial: 20-30 ft
Industrial: 30-50 ft+
Sliding Gate Requirements
Required Track Length
Gate Type Comparison
| Gate Type | Max Width | Weight Capacity | Motor Power |
|---|
Sliding Gate Formulas
Track Length = (Gate Width × 1.5) + 2 feet
Where:
• Gate Width = Width of the gate panel (feet)
• 1.5 multiplier = Space needed for gate to slide open
• +2 feet = Overtravel space for motor mechanism
Weight Calculation:
• Gate Weight = Area × Material Weight per sq ft
• Aluminum: ~4 lbs/sq ft
• Steel: ~6.7 lbs/sq ft
• Wrought Iron: ~10 lbs/sq ft
• Wood: ~3 lbs/sq ft
• Vinyl: ~2 lbs/sq ft
Example Calculation
Example: 12 ft Steel Sliding Gate
Width: 12 feet
Height: 6 feet
Material: Steel (6.7 lbs/sq ft)
Calculations:
Area = 12 × 6 = 72 sq ft
Weight = 72 × 6.7 = 482 lbs
Track Length = (12 × 1.5) + 2 = 20 ft
Motor Power Required: ½ HP (for up to 500 lbs)
