Load-Bearing Wall Calculator
Calculate the load-bearing capacity of walls based on material, dimensions, and construction type. Determine maximum safe loads for residential and commercial applications.
Step 1: Wall Specifications
Load-Bearing Capacity Factors
Capacity depends on material strength, wall dimensions, stud spacing, and support conditions. Always consult a structural engineer for critical applications.
Step 2: Load Specifications
Typical Load Capacities
Wood frame (2×4): 800-1,200 lbs per stud
Brick wall: 4,000-6,000 lbs per linear foot
Concrete block: 2,500-4,000 lbs per linear foot
Poured concrete: 6,000-10,000+ lbs per linear foot

Load-Bearing Capacity Formula
Total Capacity = (Material Strength × Wall Length) / Safety Factor
Where:
• Material Strength = Load capacity per linear foot based on material
• Wall Length = Length of the load-bearing wall in feet
• Safety Factor = Engineering safety margin (typically 1.5-3.0)
For wood frame walls:
• Per stud capacity = (Wood grade factor × Stud size factor) / Stud spacing
• Total studs = Wall length × (12 / Stud spacing in inches)
Always consult local building codes for specific requirements.
Example Calculation
Example: Wood Frame Wall (2×4, 16″ spacing)
Wall length: 12 feet
Material strength: 1,000 lbs per linear foot
Safety factor: 2.0
Calculation:
(1,000 lbs/ft × 12 ft) / 2.0 =
12,000 lbs / 2.0 =
6,000 lbs total capacity
Per stud (9 studs total):
6,000 lbs / 9 studs = 667 lbs per stud
