Adjusted Body Weight Calculator
Calculate Adjusted Body Weight (ABW), Ideal Body Weight (IBW), Lean Body Weight (LBW) and Body Mass Index (BMI) for accurate medical dosing and health assessment.
Step 1: Patient Information
Understanding Adjusted Body Weight
Adjusted Body Weight (ABW) is used for medication dosing in obese patients. It estimates a patient’s metabolically active tissue mass, which is more accurate than actual weight for determining drug doses.
Step 2: Calculation Options
Body Weight Formulas
Ideal Body Weight (Devine): Male: 50kg + 2.3kg/inch over 5ft
Female: 45.5kg + 2.3kg/inch over 5ft
Adjusted Body Weight: IBW + 0.4×(Actual – IBW)
BMI: Weight(kg) ÷ Height(m)²

Medical Weight Calculation Formulas
Ideal Body Weight (Devine Formula)
For men: IBW = 50 kg + 2.3 kg × (height in inches – 60)
For women: IBW = 45.5 kg + 2.3 kg × (height in inches – 60)
Example: Male, 70 inches (5’10”) → IBW = 50 + 2.3×(70-60) = 73 kg
Adjusted Body Weight (ABW)
Formula: ABW = IBW + 0.4 × (Actual Weight – IBW)
Used for: Drug dosing in obese patients
Example: IBW = 70 kg, Actual = 90 kg → ABW = 70 + 0.4×(90-70) = 78 kg
Body Mass Index (BMI)
Formula: BMI = Weight(kg) ÷ Height(m)²
Categories: Underweight (<18.5), Normal (18.5-24.9), Overweight (25-29.9), Obese (≥30)
Example: 80 kg, 1.75 m → BMI = 80 ÷ (1.75×1.75) = 26.1
Lean Body Weight (LBW) – Hume Formula
Men: LBW = (0.32810 × Weight) + (0.33929 × Height) – 29.5336
Women: LBW = (0.29569 × Weight) + (0.41813 × Height) – 43.2933
Used for: Anesthetic drug dosing
