Basal Rate Calculator — Calculate Your Basal Insulin Dose

Basal Rate Calculator

Calculate your basal insulin rate in units per day and per hour. Determine insulin needs based on weight, diabetes type, and insulin sensitivity.

Step 1: Patient Information

180
45

Basal Rate Formula

Total Daily Dose (TDD) = Weight (kg) × 0.5 to 1.0 (based on diabetes type)
Basal Rate = TDD × 0.4 to 0.6 (40-60% of TDD)

Step 2: Insulin Settings

Common Basal Rates

Type 1: 0.4-0.6 units/kg/day (40-60% of TDD)
Type 2: 0.5-1.0 units/kg/day (30-50% of TDD)
Gestational: 0.7-0.9 units/kg/day (40-50% of TDD)
Note: Always consult with healthcare provider

Basal Rate Calculation Formula

Total Daily Dose (TDD) = Weight (kg) × Insulin Factor

Where:
• Weight in kg = Weight in lbs ÷ 2.2046
• Insulin Factor = 0.5 to 1.5 units/kg (based on diabetes type and sensitivity)
• Basal Rate = TDD × 0.4 to 0.6 (40-60% of TDD)

Common Insulin Factors:
• Type 1: 0.4-0.6 units/kg
• Type 2: 0.5-1.0 units/kg
• Insulin resistant: 1.0-1.5 units/kg

Example Calculation

Example: Type 1 Diabetes, 180 lbs

Weight: 180 lbs = 81.6 kg
Insulin Factor: 0.5 units/kg (for Type 1)
TDD: 81.6 kg × 0.5 = 40.8 units
Basal %: 50% of TDD

Calculation:
Basal Rate = 40.8 units × 0.5 =
20.4 units per day

Converted to hourly:
20.4 ÷ 24 = 0.85 units per hour
