Bioload is the total waste produced by your aquarium inhabitants. The biological filter processes ammonia from fish waste into less harmful nitrates. A higher bioload requires more filtration and more frequent water changes.

Bioload = Fish Count × Avg Size × Waste Factor
Waste Factor: Low = 0.8, Medium = 1.5, High = 2.8. Tank capacity is calculated from volume and filtration flow. Stocking level = (Bioload / Capacity) × 100.

How do you calculate bioload?
Bioload is calculated based on fish size, species, and number. Each fish contributes a certain amount of waste per cm of body length. The calculator uses a waste multiplier based on the fish’s messiness level (Low, Medium, High) and multiplies by the number of fish and their average size.
What is a safe bioload for an aquarium?
A safe bioload is generally considered to be 50–80% of the tank’s capacity. Below 50% the tank is understocked, 50–80% is optimal, 80–95% is fully stocked, and above 95% is overstocked and may lead to water quality issues.
How often should I change water based on bioload?
For bioload under 50% of capacity, weekly water changes are sufficient. At 50–70%, change water twice weekly. At 70–85%, change every 2–3 days. Above 85%, daily water changes are recommended to maintain water quality.
