Total Daily Dose (mg) = Weight (kg) × Dose (mg/kg)
Where:
• Weight = Patient’s body weight in kilograms
• Dose = Prescribed medication dose per kilogram
• Frequency = How often the medication is taken daily
• Concentration = Medication strength in mg per mL
To calculate single dose:
• Single Dose (mg) = Total Daily Dose ÷ Frequency
• Volume (mL) = Single Dose (mg) ÷ Concentration (mg/mL)
Example Calculation
Example: Amoxicillin for 70kg patient
Weight: 70 kg
Dose: 10 mg/kg
Frequency: Twice daily (BID)
Concentration: 50 mg/mL
Calculation:
Total Daily Dose = 70 × 10 = 700 mg
Single Dose = 700 ÷ 2 = 350 mg
Volume = 350 ÷ 50 = 7.0 mL per dose
Summary:
Give 7.0 mL (350 mg) twice daily
