Circular: π × (Radius²) × Depth
π ≈ 3.1416
Step 2: Soil & Options
Common Planter Sizes
Small pots: 6-8″ diameter, 1-2 quarts
Medium pots: 10-12″ diameter, 3-5 gallons

Soil Volume Formulas
Rectangular Planter: Length × Width × Depth
Where:
• Length = Planter length (inches)
• Width = Planter width (inches)
• Depth = Soil depth needed (inches)
To convert:
• Cubic Feet = (L × W × D) ÷ 1728
• Liters = Cubic Feet × 28.3168
• Gallons = Cubic Feet × 7.48052
Example Calculation
Example: 24″ × 12″ × 10″ Planter
Length: 24 inches
Width: 12 inches
Depth: 10 inches
Calculation:
24 × 12 × 10 = 2880 cubic inches
2880 ÷ 1728 = 1.67 cubic feet
Converted:
1.67 cu ft = 47.3L = 12.5 gallons
Soil needed: ~1.7 bags (1.5 cu ft bags)
