Roof Rise Calculator
Calculate roof pitch, rise, run and rafter length for roofing projects. Convert between pitch formats (ratio, degrees, percentage).
Step 1: Roof Measurements
Understanding Roof Pitch
Roof pitch is expressed as rise over run (e.g., 6:12 means 6 inches rise for every 12 inches run). Common pitches: Low (2:12-4:12), Medium (4:12-9:12), Steep (9:12-12:12+).
Step 2: Calculation Options
Roof Pitch Formulas
Pitch (ratio): Rise ÷ Run (per 12″ run)
Pitch (degrees): arctan(Rise ÷ Run)
Pitch (%): (Rise ÷ Run) × 100
Rafter Length: √(Rise² + Run²)

Pitch Conversion Formulas
Ratio to Degrees: Angle = arctan(Rise ÷ Run)
Ratio to Percentage: % = (Rise ÷ Run) × 100
Degrees to Ratio: Rise = tan(Angle) × Run
Rafter Length Calculation
Formula: Rafter = √(Rise² + Run²)
Example: Rise = 6″, Run = 12″ → Rafter = √(36 + 144) = √180 = 13.42″
Common Roof Pitches
Low Slope: 2:12 to 4:12 (9.5° to 18.4°)
Medium Slope: 4:12 to 9:12 (18.4° to 36.9°)
Steep Slope: 9:12 to 12:12 (36.9° to 45°)
Very Steep: 12:12+ (45°+)
