Step Volume Calculator — Calculate Concrete for Steps and Stairs

Step Volume Calculator

Calculate concrete volume, materials and cost for steps, stairs and staircases. Estimate concrete needed for your stair construction project.

Step 1: Step Dimensions

Standard Step Dimensions

Standard step rise is 7-8 inches (18-20 cm) and run is 10-11 inches (25-28 cm). For comfortable stairs, follow the rule: 2×Rise + Run ≈ 25 inches (63.5 cm).

Step 2: Concrete & Cost

Concrete Estimates

Concrete steps typically require 3000-4000 psi concrete mix. Rebar: 0.5 lb per cubic foot. Formwork: 1 sheet of plywood per 8 steps.

Step Volume Calculation Formula

Step Volume = (Rise × Run × Width × Thickness) × Number of Steps

Calculate volume for one step then multiply by number of steps. Convert to cubic yards: Divide by 46,656 (inches) or 1,307,950 (cm). Add waste factor and landings if included.
