Underground Conduit Calculator — Plan Electrical Conduit Installations

Underground Conduit Calculator

Calculate conduit fill, size requirements, and installation parameters for underground electrical conduit systems according to NEC standards.

Step 1: Conduit Details

Understanding Conduit Fill

NEC (National Electrical Code) limits conduit fill to prevent overheating and allow for future wire pulls. The fill percentage is based on cross-sectional area of both conduit and wires.

Step 2: Installation Details

NEC Conduit Fill Requirements

For 1 wire: 53% max fill. For 2 wires: 31% max fill. For 3+ wires: 40% max fill. These percentages ensure proper heat dissipation and allow for future wire installation or replacement.

Conduit Fill Formula

Fill % = (Total Wire Area ÷ Conduit Area) × 100

To calculate conduit fill: determine the cross-sectional area of each wire, multiply by number of wires, then divide by the conduit’s internal area. NEC limits fill percentage based on wire count: 1 wire = 53% max, 2 wires = 31% max, 3+ wires = 40% max.

Installation Requirements

Based on your inputs: 100ft run with 2 bends requires pull boxes every 100ft. Burial depth of 24″ requires warning tape 12″ above conduit. PVC conduit requires expansion joints every 100ft in temperature zones with >25°F variation.
