Water Heater Cost Guide
Calculate water heating costs with our comprehensive calculator. Compare different water heater types, fuel sources, efficiency ratings, and estimate annual operating expenses.
Step 1: Household & Usage
Average Hot Water Usage
A typical person uses 15-20 gallons of hot water daily. Showers use 2-3 gallons per minute, baths 25-40 gallons, and washing machines 15-30 gallons per load.
Step 2: Water Heater Specifications
Energy Factor Explained
The Energy Factor (EF) measures overall efficiency. Higher EF means greater efficiency. Electric tanks: 0.90-0.95. Gas tanks: 0.60-0.70. Heat pumps: 2.0-3.5. Tankless: 0.82-0.94.

Cost Calculation Formula
Annual Cost = (Daily Gallons × 8.34 × Temp Rise × 365) ÷ (EF × Energy Value) × Energy Price
To calculate water heating costs: Multiply daily gallons by weight of water (8.34 lbs/gal), temperature rise, and days per year. Divide by product of Energy Factor and energy value (3412 BTU/kWh for electricity, 100,000 BTU/therm for gas). Multiply by energy price.
