Baluster Spacing Calculator
Calculate perfect baluster spacing for your deck, staircase, or railing with our comprehensive calculator. Determine optimal baluster placement based on railing length, baluster width, and building code requirements.
Step 1: Railing Specifications
Understanding Building Codes
Most building codes require that a 4-inch sphere cannot pass through any opening in a guardrail. This means baluster spacing should typically not exceed 4 inches for safety compliance.
Step 2: Spacing Parameters
About End Spacing
End spacing is the distance from the last baluster to the post or railing end. This spacing should be equal to or less than the spacing between balusters for a uniform appearance.

Installation Instructions
1. Mark the center of your first baluster at the end spacing distance from the starting post.
2. Measure and mark the calculated spacing from the center of the first baluster.
3. Continue marking until all baluster positions are marked.
4. Ensure the end spacing at the final post matches the starting end spacing.
Spacing Calculation Formula
Spacing = (Railing Length – (End Spacing × 2) – (Baluster Width × Number of Balusters)) / (Number of Balusters – 1)
To calculate spacing: Subtract the total width of all balusters and both end spaces from the railing length, then divide by the number of gaps between balusters.
