Driveway Slope Formula

Slope Percentage = (Rise / Run) × 100%
Slope Ratio = Run : Rise
Slope Angle = arctan(Rise / Run)

Step 2: Driveway Type & Options

Recommended Driveway Slopes

Residential: 1-15% slope (optimal 2-10%)
Accessible/ADA: Max 5% slope
Garage Entry: 10-15% max
Drainage Minimum: 1-2% slope

Driveway Slope Formula & Standards

Slope Percentage = (Rise / Run) × 100%

Where:
• Rise = Vertical height difference (inches)
• Run = Horizontal distance (feet, converted to inches for calculation)
• 1 foot = 12 inches

To convert:
• Ratio = Run : Rise (simplified to whole numbers)
• Angle = arctan(Rise / Run) in degrees

Example Calculation

Example: Standard Residential Driveway

Rise: 24 inches (2 feet)
Run: 50 feet (600 inches)

Calculation:
Slope Percentage = (24 / 600) × 100 =
0.04 × 100 = 4%

Converted:
Ratio = 600:24 = 25:1 (simplified)
Angle = arctan(24/600) = arctan(0.04) = 2.3°

Building Code Standards

Common Driveway Slope Requirements

• ADA Accessibility: Maximum 5% slope (1:20 ratio)
• Residential Driveways: 1-15% slope (optimal 2-10%)
• Garage Entry Slopes: 10-15% maximum
• Minimum for Drainage: 1-2% slope
• Steep Driveways: Over 15% may require special design
• Commercial Driveways: Typically 2-8% slope
