Ridge Cap Calculation Formula
Caps Needed = (Ridge Length + Hip Length) ÷ Coverage per Cap
Where:
• Ridge Length = Total length of roof ridges (feet)
• Hip Length = Total length of roof hips (feet)
• Coverage per Cap = Length covered by one ridge cap piece (feet)
• Waste Factor = Percentage extra for cuts and mistakes
Formula with Waste:
• Total Caps = Caps Needed × (1 + Waste Factor/100)
Example Calculation
Example: Standard 3-Tab Caps
Ridge Length: 50 feet
Hip Length: 20 feet
Coverage per Cap: 3 feet
Waste Factor: 10%
Calculation:
Total Length = 50 + 20 = 70 feet
Caps Needed = 70 ÷ 3 = 23.33 caps
Round up to 24 caps
With Waste = 24 × 1.10 = 26.4 caps
Round up to 27 caps total
Result:
27 standard ridge caps needed
