Step Calculator
Calculate the number of steps needed for your staircase. Understand how rise, run, and building codes affect your stair design and construction requirements.
Step 1: Stair Dimensions
Building Code Guidelines
Most building codes require riser height between 6-7.75 inches and tread depth of at least 10 inches. The ideal relationship is: 2×Riser + Tread = 24-25 inches.
Step 2: Cost & Materials
About Step Calculation
Number of steps = Total Rise ÷ Riser Height (rounded up). Total Run = (Number of Steps – 1) × Tread Depth. Stair angle = arctan(Rise ÷ Run).

Stair Calculation Formula
Steps = Ceiling(Total Rise ÷ Riser Height)
The number of steps is calculated by dividing the total rise (floor-to-floor height) by the desired riser height and rounding up to the nearest whole number. Each step consists of a riser (vertical part) and a tread (horizontal part).
