Block Mortar Calculator
Calculate the amount of mortar needed for brick, block, and masonry projects. Estimate bags of mortar mix based on wall dimensions, block size, and joint thickness.
Step 1: Wall Dimensions
Understanding Wall Dimensions
Measure the total length and height of your wall. Single wythe walls are typically 4″ thick (one block wide), double wythe are 8″ thick, and triple wythe are 12″ thick.

About Mortar Types
Type N mortar is general purpose (750 psi). Type S is for structural applications (1800 psi). Type M is high strength (2500 psi). Type O is for non-load bearing interior walls (350 psi).

Mortar Calculation Formula
Mortar Volume = (Wall Area × Joint Thickness) × Waste Factor
The mortar volume is calculated based on wall area and joint thickness, then adjusted for waste. Number of bags depends on bag size (typically 80 lb bags cover 0.6-0.8 cubic feet when mixed).
