Paver Sand Calculator
Calculate how much sand you need for your paver project. Determine sand volume for base preparation, joint filling, and leveling for patios, walkways, and driveways.
Step 1: Project Dimensions
Sand Calculation Formula
Volume (cubic feet) = Length × Width × (Depth/12)
Weight (tons) = Volume × Sand Density
Step 2: Sand Type & Options
Recommended Depths
Paver Base: 1-2 inches
Joint Sand: 0.5-1 inch
Leveling Bed: 1-1.5 inches
Play Areas: 6+ inches

Project Type Comparison
| Project Type | Dimensions | Cubic Yards | Tons |
|---|
Sand Calculation Formula
Volume (cubic feet) = Length × Width × (Depth/12)
Where:
• Length = Project length in feet
• Width = Project width in feet
• Depth = Sand depth in inches (divided by 12 to convert to feet)
Conversions:
• Cubic Yards = Cubic Feet ÷ 27
• Tons = Cubic Yards × Sand Density (typically 1.2-1.4 tons/yd³)
• 50-lb Bags = (Cubic Feet × 100) ÷ 0.5 (approximate)
Installation Tips
Best Practices for Paver Sand
1. Base Preparation: Excavate area, add gravel base, compact thoroughly
2. Sand Layer: Spread sand evenly, use screed boards for level surface
3. Joint Sand: Pour sand over pavers, sweep into joints, compact gently
4. Moistening: Lightly mist sand to help it settle (avoid washing out)
5. Compaction: Use plate compactor after installation to lock pavers in place
Pro Tip: Always order 10-15% extra sand to account for settling, waste, and future maintenance.
