Walkway Calculator — Calculate Materials for Walkways & Paths

Walkway Calculator

Calculate materials needed for walkways, patios, and paths. Estimate pavers, bricks, gravel, sand, and concrete requirements for your landscaping project.

Step 1: Walkway Details

Walkway Planning Tips

Standard walkway width: 3-4 feet for single person, 4-6 feet for two people. Allow 5-10% extra materials for cuts and waste. Base material should be 4-6 inches deep for stability.

Step 2: Material Requirements

Material Coverage

Gravel Base: 1 cubic yard covers ~100 sq ft at 3″ depth
Sand Bed: 1 ton covers ~100 sq ft at 1″ depth
Pavers: ~4.5 bricks per sq ft (4×8 inches)
Concrete: 1 cubic yard covers ~80 sq ft at 4″ depth

Walkway Installation Guide

Step 1: Planning & Layout

Mark the walkway boundaries with stakes and string. Check local regulations for setbacks. Ensure proper drainage away from structures.

Step 2: Excavation

Excavate to required depth (paver thickness + base material + sand bed). Typically 6-8 inches deep. Slope slightly for drainage (1/4″ per foot).

Step 3: Base Preparation

Add and compact gravel base in 2-inch layers. Use plate compactor for proper compaction. Add sand bed and level carefully.

Step 4: Paver Installation

Lay pavers according to pattern, maintaining consistent joints. Cut edge pieces as needed. Install edging to secure perimeter.

Step 5: Finishing

Spread polymeric sand over surface and sweep into joints. Lightly mist with water to activate binding. Allow to cure before use.
